What If I Have an Old Injury or Lack Flexibility

What If I Have an Old Injury or Lack Flexibility

What If I Have an Old Injury or Lack Flexibility?

This is a very common concern for teenagers and adults thinking about starting martial arts.

Old injuries, stiff joints, tight muscles, or simply feeling “not very flexible” stop a lot of people before they even begin. The good news is — these things don’t automatically rule martial arts out.

Training Is Adapted to the Individual

At Absolute Martial Arts, our teen and adult classes in Carshalton, Caterham, Ewell, North Cheam, and Redhill are coached with real people in mind — not idealised athletes.

That means:

• Exercises can be adapted

• Techniques can be modified

• Training intensity can be adjusted

• Progress is built gradually

You’re never expected to train through pain or ignore your body.

Old Injuries Are Common — and Manageable

Many adults training with us have:

• Knee or ankle issues

• Shoulder or back problems

• Previous sports injuries

• Limited mobility from time off training

Our coaches will always:

• Ask about injuries beforehand

• Offer alternatives where needed

• Help you train safely within your limits

Martial arts should support your body, not break it down.

You Don’t Need to Be Flexible to Start

Flexibility is something you develop over time — not something you need on day one.

Most beginners:

• Feel stiff at first

• Improve naturally through regular movement

• Gain mobility without forcing stretches

Trying to “get flexible first” usually just delays progress unnecessarily.

Listening to Your Body Is Encouraged

Pushing through pain is not a badge of honour.

In our classes:

• Resting when needed is encouraged

• Taking things slower is respected

• Progress is long-term, not rushed

Consistency and safety always come before intensity.

Martial Arts Can Improve Mobility Over Time

Many students find that training:

• Improves joint movement

• Reduces stiffness

• Builds strength around old injuries

• Increases confidence in how their body moves

Because martial arts develops controlled movement, it often feels more sustainable than random gym workouts.

Try Training With Support, Not Pressure

If you’re in Carshalton, Caterham, Ewell, North Cheam, or Redhill, a free trial lets you explain any injuries or concerns before you start.

The class will be adapted around you — not the other way around.
